AN ACT 1 Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An 2 act relating to the public school system, including certain 3 provisions applicable as well to private and parochial 4 schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the 5 laws relating thereto," providing for services and courses 6 relating to teenage suicide and other issues. 7 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 8 hereby enacts as follows: 9 Section 1. Section 1402 of the act of March 10, 1949 10 (P.L.30, No.14), known as the Public School Code of 1949, is 11 amended by adding a subsection to read: 12 Section 1402. Health Services.--* * * 13 (g) Beginning with the school year 1988-1989, each school 14 district shall establish a school health referral service for 15 students to receive counseling on suicide, pregnancy, drugs and 16 alcohol and any other areas authorized by the board of school 17 directors. This service shall include distribution of the names
1 and telephone numbers of help agencies within the community to 2 secondary school students, administrators, faculty, staff and 3 parents. 4 Section 2. The act is amended by adding sections to read: 5 Section 1548. Peer Sharing Within Health Course.--Beginning 6 with the school year 1988-1989 and each year thereafter, every 7 child of secondary school age shall receive information 8 concerning effective means of peer sharing within the health 9 course of study required in accordance with the State Board of 10 Education regulations. 11 Section 1549. Teenage Suicide and Other Issues.--Beginning 12 with the school year 1988-1989 and each year thereafter, each 13 secondary school student shall receive mandatory instruction in 14 methods of dealing with teenage suicide, pregnancy and other 15 issues authorized by the board of school directors within the 16 health course of study required in accordance with the State 17 Board of Education regulations. Each elementary school student 18 may receive instruction in methods of dealing with teenage 19 suicide and pregnancies when determined necessary by the board 20 of school directors. The board of school directors shall 21 establish the manner by which this instruction shall be 22 provided. Each school district in developing its instructional 23 program shall consult with the county mental health retardation 24 program. 25 Section 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
