                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the development of the
     2     world's first all-electronic computing device.

     3     WHEREAS, An engineering research team at the Moore School of
     4  Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania began
     5  working in the Spring of 1943 on an electronic computing device;
     6  and
     7     WHEREAS, Two and one-half years later, on February 14, 1946,
     8  ENIAC, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, the
     9  world's first all-electronic, large scale, general purpose
    10  digital computer was unveiled in Philadelphia; and
    11     WHEREAS, ENIAC was the largest electronic machine in the
    12  world and it could perform computations 1,000 times faster than
    13  any other machine then in existence; and
    14     WHEREAS, A new epoch in the history of human thought dawned
    15  with the development of ENIAC; and

     1     WHEREAS, ENIAC's first assignment--a nuclear physics problem
     2  that would have required an estimated 100 men and women working
     3  for one year to solve--was accomplished in two hours; and
     4     WHEREAS, In 1984 ENIAC's role in the history of technology
     5  was recognized by the National Society of Professional
     6  Engineers, which named it one of the ten most outstanding
     7  engineering developments of the past half century; and
     8     WHEREAS, A celebration commemorating the 40th Anniversary of
     9  ENIAC is scheduled to be held by the University of Pennsylvania
    10  in October 1986; therefore be it
    11     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives join with the
    12  University of Pennsylvania in commemorating the 40th Anniversary
    13  of ENIAC.
