           JOSEPHS, GODSHALL, O'BRIEN, DALEY, E. Z. TAYLOR, GEIST, BOOK,
           NAHILL, BUNT, WESTON, PRESSMANN, OLASZ, KENNEY, ARGALL,

        REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON RULES, MAY 7, 1986

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging public television affiliates in Pennsylvania to air the
     2     Canadian documentary, "Harvest of Despair."

     3     WHEREAS, The award-winning Canadian documentary, "Harvest of
     4  Despair," dealing with the Soviet-managed famine which took
     5  place in the Ukraine during the 1930's, is not being carried by
     6  any public television affiliates in Pennsylvania; and
     7     WHEREAS, "Harvest of Despair" depicts the trials of an
     8  estimated three million Ukrainians who starved to death, while
     9  just a few miles across the border in the Russian-Soviet
    10  Federated Socialist Republic there were large surpluses of food
    11  which were not permitted into the Ukraine by the Soviets; and
    12     WHEREAS, This documentary has been routinely rejected for
    13  airing by public television stations because of what is termed
    14  its "anti-Soviet" bias; and
    15     WHEREAS, There exists great interest in this program by
    16  Pennsylvania citizens of Slavic ancestry, as well as other

     1  concerned citizens of this Commonwealth; therefore be it
     2     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge and
     3  encourage public television affiliates in Pennsylvania to air
     4  the award-winning Canadian documentary, "Harvest of Despair," in
     5  the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
