                                     AN ACT

     1  Entitling firemen to reimbursement for certain academic
     2     expenses; enlarging the powers and duties of the Department
     3     of Community Affairs and making an appropriation.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  Firemen and volunteer firemen shall be entitled
     7  to reimbursement by the Commonwealth for tuition costs of
     8  programs of study which are credited toward the requirements of
     9  a collegiate degree in fire service technology in accredited
    10  institutions in Pennsylvania. Reimbursement shall be made one
    11  year after successful completion of each academic year of study.
    12  It shall only be made whenever the individual applying for it is
    13  still employed as a fireman in an organized fire department in
    14  the Commonwealth, or is still actively engaged as a volunteer
    15  fireman in an organized volunteer fire department in the
    16  Commonwealth. Reimbursement requests shall be administered by
    17  the Department of Community Affairs which shall have the power
    18  and duty of promulgating rules and regulations for the


     1  administration of the provisions of this act.
     2     Section 2.  The sum of $1,000,000, or as much thereof as may
     3  be necessary, is specifically appropriated from the General Fund
     4  to the Department of Community Affairs for the fiscal year 1979-
     5  1980 to administer the provisions of this act.
     6     Section 3.  This act shall take effect July 1, 1980.
