        AS REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION, HOUSE OF
           REPRESENTATIVES, AS AMENDED, APRIL 17, 1978

                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," further providing for instruction for
     6     exceptional children.

     7     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     8  hereby enacts as follows:
     9     Section 1.  The SECTION 1372, act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30,   <--
    10  No.14), known as the "Public School Code of 1949," is amended by
    11  adding a section SUBSECTION to read:                              <--
    12     Section 914.1-A.  Minimum Term of Instruction.--Every          <--
    13  exceptional child or person shall be given a minimum of eight
    14  years of instruction.
    15     SECTION 1372.  EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN; EDUCATION AND             <--
    16  TRAINING.--* * *


     1     (7)  MINIMUM YEARS OF INSTRUCTION. EVERY EXCEPTIONAL CHILD OR
     2  PERSON ENROLLED IN A SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM ON OR BEFORE
     3  SEPTEMBER 1, 1977, SHALL RECEIVE A MINIMUM OF EIGHT (8) YEARS OF
     4  INSTRUCTION. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO INSTITUTIONALIZED
     5  INDIVIDUALS.
     6     Section 2.  This act shall take effect immediately.
