                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 18 (Crimes and Offenses) of the Pennsylvania
     2     Consolidated Statutes, authorizing immediate trial or posting
     3     of security for appearance at trial in shoplifting cases.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  Section 3929 of Title 18, act of November 25,
     7  1970 (P.L.707, No.230), known as the Pennsylvania Consolidated
     8  Statutes, added December 6, 1972 (P.L.1482, No.334), is amended
     9  by adding a subsection to read:
    10  § 3929.  Retail theft.

    12     (d.1)  Immediate trial; posting security for trial.--A
    13  defendant detained and charged with violation of this section
    14  may be taken by a peace officer before a justice of the peace
    15  without unnecessary delay where a citation shall be filed
    16  against him. The defendant shall then be given an immediate
    17  trial or the opportunity of posting security equivalent to the
    18  amount of the fine for the offense for his appearance at trial


     1  thereon not less than three nor more than ten days thereafter.

     3     Section 2.  This act shall take effect immediately.
