                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30, No.14), entitled "An
     2     act relating to the public school system, including certain
     3     provisions applicable as well to private and parochial
     4     schools; amending, revising, consolidating and changing the
     5     laws relating thereto," providing for defraying of expenses
     6     of handicapped students.

     7     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     8  hereby enacts as follows:
     9     Section 1.  Section 1381, act of March 10, 1949 (P.L.30,
    10  No.14), known as the "Public School Code of 1949," is amended to
    11  read:
    12     Section 1381.  Higher Education for [Blind or Deaf]
    13  Handicapped Students.--The Department of [Public Instruction]
    14  Education is authorized to make provision for defraying the
    15  necessary expense of any students who are [blind or deaf]
    16  handicapped and are regularly enrolled students pursuing any
    17  course of study, profession, art, or science in any university,
    18  college, conservatory of music, normal, professional, or
    19  vocational school approved by the Department of [Public


     1  Instruction] Education, and who are residents of the
     2  Commonwealth. Before any contract is entered into, the
     3  Department of [Public Instruction] Education shall make a
     4  careful investigation of all circumstances surrounding the case.
     5  If, after such investigation, it appears that any [blind or
     6  deaf] handicapped student who desires to attend any such school
     7  or institution, or who is attending such school or institution,
     8  seems to be fitted for special work, the Department of [Public
     9  Instruction] Education is authorized to expend the necessary
    10  amount, out of the general sum appropriated for this purpose,
    11  not to exceed five hundred dollars ($500) per year for each such
    12  [blind or deaf] handicapped student.
    13     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
