A RESOLUTION
Designating the month of September 2016 as "Campus Fire Safety
Month" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Recent student-related housing fires in Pennsylvania
have tragically cut short the lives of some of the youths of
this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Since January 2000, at least 170 people, including
students, parents and children, have died in college-related
fires across the United States; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 87% of these deaths have occurred in
off-campus occupancies; and
WHEREAS, A number of fatal fires have occurred in buildings
where the fire safety systems have been compromised or disabled
by the occupants; and
WHEREAS, Automatic fire alarm systems and smoke alarms
provide the necessary early warning of a fire to occupants and
the fire department so that appropriate action can be taken; and
WHEREAS, An automatic fire sprinkler system is a highly
effective method of controlling or extinguishing a fire in its
