A RESOLUTION

Designating September 2010 as "Mushroom Month" in Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, American mushroom farming began on a farm in Chester

3

County, now recognized as the "mushroom capital of the world";

4

and

5

WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is witnessing a growing and

6

productive mushroom agribusiness in many parts of Pennsylvania;

7

and

8

WHEREAS, This Commonwealth leads the nation in mushroom

9

production, with dedicated and innovative mushroom growers

10

producing 496.7 million pounds each year, valued at more than

11

$453 million; and

12

WHEREAS, Pennsylvania mushroom producers supply 63% of the

13

nation's agaricus mushrooms, the conventional button variety

14

that accounts for most of the nation's mushroom sales; and

15

WHEREAS, Mushrooms are one of the most difficult commodities

16

to grow due to the intensive labor required to produce a

consistent, high-quality crop; and

2

WHEREAS, Modern mushroom farms are highly technical

3

operations that utilize computerized systems to monitor

4

production and safety. Mushroom growers carefully prepare

5

compost, generate an indoor pasteurization process, control

6

temperature and humidity and harvest their crop thanks to

7

advancements in technology; and

8

WHEREAS, The mushroom industry contributes to the

9

preservation of this Commonwealth's agricultural customs and

10

traditions; and

11

WHEREAS, The mushroom industry in this Commonwealth greatly

12

contributes to the economy of Chester County and Pennsylvania,

13

offering a marketable product for export; therefore be it

14

RESOLVED, In recognition of Pennsylvania's thriving

15

agriculture industry, that the Senate of Pennsylvania designate

16

September 2010, as "Mushroom Month" in Pennsylvania, encourage

17

all citizens to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of

18

the mushroom industry to produce an abundant, profitable

19

mushroom crop, recognized for superior quality and its

20

significance to Pennsylvania's economy.
