A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the significance of arson dogs and the National Fire

2

Dog Monument.

WHEREAS, Arson dogs, also known as fire dogs, can be trained

4

to detect certain chemicals, such as gasoline, that may indicate

5

that a fire was intentionally set; and

6

WHEREAS, These dogs are becoming increasingly valuable in the

7

fight against arson and insurance fraud and many times the

8

evidence found by the canines is used to prosecute a wide

9

variety of crimes; and

10

WHEREAS, The National Fire Dog Monument, sponsored by State

11

Farm, an insurance company that has funded training programs for

12

arson dogs, and the American Humane Association, will be the

13

first national monument dedicated to the animals and their human

14

partners; and

15

WHEREAS, The seven-foot monument to arson dogs was created by

16

firefighter Austin Weishel, who is just 22 years old, and was

17

cosponsored by both State Farm Insurance and the American Humane

18

Society; and

WHEREAS, After years of planning, the monument is finally

2

complete and is now making a journey across the country to

3

Washington, DC, which will be the monument's permanent home; and

4

WHEREAS, On June 26, 2012, as part of a national tour, the

5

National Fire Dog Monument will be in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania,

6

at the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum from 3 p.m. until 6

7

p.m.; therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the significance of arson

9

dogs and the National Fire Dog Monument.
