| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the week of September 20 through 26, 2009, as "Low- |
2 | Back Pain Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Thirty-one million Americans have low-back pain at |
4 | any given time, and one-half of all working Americans admit to |
5 | having low-back pain symptoms each year; and |
6 | WHEREAS, One-third of all Americans 18 years of age and older |
7 | had a back problem in the past five years severe enough for them |
8 | to seek professional help; and |
9 | WHEREAS, The cost of treating low-back pain is estimated to |
10 | be a staggering $50 billion yearly; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Studies suggest that people in pain are at high risk |
12 | for depression; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Sixty-five billion dollars are lost in annual wages |
14 | due to low-back pain in the United States; and |
15 | WHEREAS, In 2005, more than 14 million office visits to |
16 | United States' physicians were made by patients complaining of |
17 | back pain; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Low-back pain is the second most symptom-related |

1 | reason for doctor visits; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Low-back pain can be better managed by employing |
3 | disease management protocols similar to those developed for |
4 | diabetes, chronic heart disease and high blood pressure; |
5 | therefore be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of September 20 |
7 | through 26, 2009, as "Low-Back Pain Awareness Week" in |
8 | Pennsylvania and call upon all citizens of Pennsylvania to |
9 | observe this week by participating in appropriate activities to |
10 | raise awareness of low-back pain and by learning how to improve |
11 | the quality of life for people in this Commonwealth suffering |
12 | from low-back pain. |
