SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 61 Session of 2005


        INTRODUCED BY TARTAGLIONE, BOSCOLA, FERLO, COSTA, ERICKSON,
           O'PAKE, MELLOW, CONTI, THOMPSON, RAFFERTY, ORIE, BRIGHTBILL,
           PIPPY, EARLL, PILEGGI, KITCHEN, LOGAN, ARMSTRONG,
           C. WILLIAMS, TOMLINSON, M. WHITE AND MUSTO, APRIL 4, 2005

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, APRIL 4, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of April 2005 as "Cancer Control Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Cancer is the second leading cause of death among
     4  Americans, exceeded only by heart disease; and
     5     WHEREAS, One of every four deaths in the United States is due
     6  to cancer; and
     7     WHEREAS, More than 19 million new cases of cancer have been
     8  diagnosed since 1990, and more than 1.3 million new cases of
     9  cancer will be diagnosed in 2005; and
    10     WHEREAS, There were 69,254 average annual cancer cases in
    11  Pennsylvania from 1998 through 2000 and 30,077 average annual
    12  cancer deaths in Pennsylvania from 1997 through 2001; and
    13     WHEREAS, There are three forms of cancer responsible for more
    14  than 50% of cancer deaths in men and women: for men, lung
    15  cancer, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer, and for women,
    16  lung cancer, breast cancer and colorectal cancer; and
    17     WHEREAS, Pursuant to a 1938 Congressional Resolution

     1  providing for annual "Cancer Control Month" proclamations, the
     2  President of the United States has declared April 2005 as
     3  "Cancer Control Month" to provide the opportunity for Americans
     4  to learn vital information about cancer prevention, detection
     5  and treatment; and
     6     WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society offers many programs to
     7  help educate Americans about cancer risks, early detection and
     8  prevention; and
     9     WHEREAS, A low-fat diet filled with fruits, vegetables, lean
    10  meats and whole grains, along with regular exercise and healthy
    11  lifestyle choices helps reduce the risk of developing many
    12  chronic diseases, including cancer; and
    13     WHEREAS, Regular checkups and preventive health screenings
    14  can detect many forms of cancer at early stages, allowing
    15  doctors to stop cancer before it spreads; and
    16     WHEREAS, Two out of three cancer cases and deaths can be
    17  prevented by lifestyle change or cured if detected early;
    18  therefore be it
    19     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of April 2005
    20  as "Cancer Control Month" in Pennsylvania.
