A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of August 6 through 10, 2018, as "YMCA
Advocacy Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania maintains more YMCAs than any other
state in the United States, with 68 associations and 105 branch
locations; and
WHEREAS, The YMCA is a charitable, nonprofit organization
committed to ensuring no individual will be denied services or
participation in YMCA programs, including child care, day and
summer camps or YMCA membership, because of economic hardship;
and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania YMCAs have more than 700,000 members
and more than 180,000 individuals participating in programs and
services for children and families, teens and older adults; and
WHEREAS, The YMCA promotes youth development, healthy living
and social responsibility in a variety of programs and services

to more than 1 million people of all ages, backgrounds, faiths
and income levels; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania YMCAs are the largest child-care
service providers in this Commonwealth, subsidizing the care of
one in five children, which service is valued at more than $11
million; and
WHEREAS, YMCAs provide long-term and short-term housing to
fight homelessness in this Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, YMCAs depend on the outstanding efforts of more than
34,000 volunteers who provide valuable community services across
this Commonwealth serving as child-care aides, swim instructors,
tutors, mentors, coaches, chaperones and advocates, with
volunteer hours exceeding $740,000 in value; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania YMCAs emphasize and maintain the core
values of honesty, caring, respect and responsibility in all
operations; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania YMCAs uphold the standards of
accountability, ethics, responsibility and transparency
entrusted upon them by the public as charitable organizations,
standing as leaders of the nonprofit community; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
week of August 6 through 10, 2018, as "YMCA Advocacy Week" in
Pennsylvania.
