A RESOLUTION
1 Honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower for his leadership in
2 creating the Interstate Highway System, commemorating the
3 50th anniversary of the Interstate Highway System and
4 designating June 29, 2006, as "President Dwight D. Eisenhower
5 Interstate Highway System Day" in Pennsylvania.
6 WHEREAS, On June 29, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower
7 signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 to establish a
8 41,000-mile National System of Interstate and Defense Highways,
9 known as the Interstate Highway System, and the Highway Revenue
10 Act of 1956 to create a Highway Trust Fund; and
11 WHEREAS, President Eisenhower's leadership in promoting the
12 system and moving the program forward on schedule earned him the
13 title "Father of the Interstate System"; and
14 WHEREAS, In 1990 the National System of Interstate and
15 Defense Highways was renamed the Dwight D. Eisenhower National
16 System of Interstate and Defense Highways to recognize President
17 Eisenhower's role in the creation of the system; and
18 WHEREAS, The Interstate Highway System is a total of 46,876
19 miles in the United States, of which 1,758 miles are in the
1 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania; and
2 WHEREAS, The original projected cost of the Interstate
3 Highway System was $37.62 billion in 1958; and
4 WHEREAS, That number increased to $128.90 billion in 1991;
5 and
6 WHEREAS, The Interstate Highway System is considered to be
7 the world's largest public works project and has forever changed
8 American society; and
9 WHEREAS, Interstate highways comprise less than 1% of our
10 nation's roads but carry more than 24% of travel, including 41%
11 of total truck miles traveled; and
12 WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians have benefited from the
13 Interstate Highway System in the form of improved safety,
14 personal mobility and enhanced economic development; and
15 WHEREAS, The Interstate Highway System continues to be vital
16 in advancing the quality of life in the Commonwealth of
17 Pennsylvania; and
18 WHEREAS, It is essential that the Commonwealth of
19 Pennsylvania maintain its longstanding support and commitment to
20 the enhancement of our Interstate Highway System; therefore be
21 it
22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
23 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania honor President Dwight D.
24 Eisenhower for his leadership in creating the Dwight D.
25 Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways;
26 and be it further
27 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge all
28 Pennsylvanians to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Dwight
29 D. Eisenhower Interstate Highway System; and be it further
30 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June

1 29, 2006, as "President Dwight D. Eisenhower Interstate Highway
2 System Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
3 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
4 the Dwight D. Eisenhower Library, 200 Southeast Fourth Street,
5 Abilene, Kansas 67410.
