| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring Kathy Sledge for her steadfast commitment to community |
2 | service through her active participation in organizations |
3 | seeking to improve the lives of children in this Commonwealth |
4 | and abroad. |
5 | WHEREAS, Kathy Sledge is a Philadelphia native, born the |
6 | youngest of five girls to parents Edwin and Florez Sledge; and |
7 | WHEREAS, At the young age of six, Ms. Sledge began singing |
8 | with her older sisters and continued to share her gift of song |
9 | as she became the lead vocalist of the musical group Sister |
10 | Sledge; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Sister Sledge recorded several international hits |
12 | that quickly soared to the number one spot on the UK charts and |
13 | other popular music charts, and the group also received the |
14 | coveted Silver Award at the Tokyo Music Festival; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Sister Sledge's most popular song was "We Are |
16 | Family," which earned a Grammy nomination and was later inducted |
17 | into the Grammy Hall of Fame; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In 2001, "We Are Family," was voted the number two |
2 | biggest record of all time; and |
3 | WHEREAS, Whether performing with Sister Sledge or solo, Ms. |
4 | Sledge has a unique ability to draw people together making |
5 | everyone realize that "We Are Family"; and |
6 | WHEREAS, In 2007, Ms. Sledge founded the "Love Will Project"; |
7 | and |
8 | WHEREAS, The "Love Will Project" films acts of altruism that |
9 | will restore, rebuild and renew lives around the world, bringing |
10 | celebrities together and assisting those in need; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Ms. Sledge believes love makes all the difference in |
12 | the education of children across our nation and around the |
13 | world; and |
14 | WHEREAS, The "Love Will Project" began in Elkins Park Middle |
15 | School in Elkins Park through Ms. Sledge's "What Family Means to |
16 | Me" program; and |
17 | WHEREAS, "What Family Means to Me" is a program encouraging |
18 | youth within our educational system to gain an appreciation of |
19 | the arts at an early age; and |
20 | WHEREAS, Later, the "Love Will Project" expanded its reach by |
21 | restoring the Cobbs Cross Primary School Library in Antigua, an |
22 | island in the West Indies; and |
23 | WHEREAS, As a result of her participation in the "Love Will |
24 | Project," Ms. Sledge was named Goodwill Ambassador for Antigua |
25 | and Barbuda; and |
26 | WHEREAS, Ms. Sledge is the honorary spokesperson for the |
27 | "1,000 Women for 1,000 Girls" mentorship campaign; and |
28 | WHEREAS, Ms. Sledge serves on the board of directors of the |
29 | We Are Family Foundation; and |
30 | WHEREAS, In addition, Ms. Sledge founded the "We Are Family |

1 | Day" as a day for students to celebrate their academic |
2 | achievements, build their spirits and discuss ways that they can |
3 | contribute to an environment where all students are successful; |
4 | and |
5 | WHEREAS, "We Are Family Day" was launched at Elkins Park |
6 | Middle School in Elkins Park; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Ms. Sledge received an honorary doctorate from the |
8 | Metropolitan College of New York for her outstanding musical |
9 | achievements; and |
10 | WHEREAS, In December 2011, Ms. Sledge received the David P. |
11 | Richardson, Jr., Nation Builder Award by the National Black |
12 | Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) in Chicago, Illinois; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Giving unselfishly of her time and talents to |
14 | enhance the lives of children by improving their educational |
15 | experience, Ms. Sledge is assisting in creating a solid |
16 | foundation in children's lives, a solid foundation will lead to |
17 | developing our nation's next great leaders who are globally |
18 | engaged and culturally astute; therefore be it |
19 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate |
20 | Kathy Sledge on her philanthropic endeavors assisting children |
21 | in this Commonwealth and those abroad by sharing the arts and |
22 | highlighting the importance of education. |
