INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 25, 2002
A RESOLUTION 1 Designating August 2002 as "Native American Awareness Month" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The Lenape are an indigenous people in this 4 Commonwealth and were displaced from the eastern states to 5 Indiana in the early 1800s; and 6 WHEREAS, The Thunder Mountain Lenape is an organization of 7 persons who share the Native American heritage of the Lenape; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, The United Nations celebrates August 9, 2002, as 10 "Indigenous Peoples' Day"; and 11 WHEREAS, Members of the Thunder Mountain Lenape join in the 12 United Nations celebration by contributing their Totem Rhythms
1 project to the displays at the United Nations headquarters in 2 New York City; and 3 WHEREAS, The Totem Rhythms project involves the creation of 4 painted story poles in order to help participants in the project 5 explore their personal stories, genealogy, group identity and 6 heritage and reflects the culture of the indigenous peoples of 7 this Commonwealth; and 8 WHEREAS, The House of Representatives supports the United 9 Nations effort to increase public awareness of indigenous 10 peoples' cultural heritage and place in today's society; 11 therefore be it 12 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate August 13 2002 as "Native American Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
