A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the American Cancer Society for its commitment to

2

research and public service and designating the week of March

3

19 through 25, 2012, as "Daffodil Days Awareness Week" in

4

Pennsylvania.

5

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society is the largest source of

6

private, nonprofit cancer research funds in the United States,

7

second only to the Federal Government in dollars spent; and

8

WHEREAS, To date, the American Cancer Society has invested

9

more than $3.4 billion in cancer research; and

10

WHEREAS, Currently in Pennsylvania, the American Cancer

11

Society is funding 54 research grants totaling more than $32

12

million; and

WHEREAS, This investment in research is paying off, with the

2

five-year cancer survival rate now 67%, up from 49% in the

3

1970s; and

4

WHEREAS, Over the years and with funds raised from Daffodil

5

Days, the American Cancer Society has made great strides in

6

cancer research, including funding scientists who have

7

discovered the Papanicolaou test, bone marrow transplant

8

techniques, tamoxifen and Gleevec; and

9

WHEREAS, Daffodil Days is one of the American Cancer

10

Society's oldest fundraising programs and has helped to empower

11

people to make a difference in the fight against cancer; and

12

WHEREAS, Forty-six Nobel Prize winners were funded by the

13

American Cancer Society at some point in their careers; and

14

WHEREAS, An estimated 78,340 people in this Commonwealth and

15

an estimated 1,638,910 people nationwide will be diagnosed with

16

cancer in 2012; and

17

WHEREAS, In the United States, men have slightly less than a

18

one-in-two lifetime risk of developing cancer and women have a

19

little more than a one-in-three lifetime risk, therefore, it is

20

imperative for the American Cancer Society to continue to expand

21

flower sales and volunteer participation in Daffodil Days so

22

that everyone can continue to work together toward a cancer-free

23

society; therefore be it

24

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the

25

American Cancer Society for its commitment to research and

26

public service and designate the week of March 19 through 25,

27

2012, as "Daffodil Days Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
