        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MAY 6, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating June 2, 1998, as "Anti-Violence Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Acts of violence create fear, injury and destruction
     4  in our communities and are increasingly being committed by
     5  younger offenders and against younger victims; and
     6     WHEREAS, Violence prevention requires individual and
     7  community action in recognizing the underlying causes of
     8  violence, improving partnerships with law enforcement and other
     9  service providers and promoting zero tolerance of violence
    10  against any individual or group; and
    11     WHEREAS, The VIOLETS, an anti-violence organization at Pocono
    12  Elementary Center in Tannersville, is sponsoring special events
    13  on June 2, 1998, to highlight the presence and dangers of
    14  violence and mobilize support for violence prevention
    15  initiatives; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate June 2,
    17  1998, as "Anti-Violence Day" in Pennsylvania in recognition of


     1  school-based and community-based efforts to curb violence in our
     2  society and urge cooperation in these efforts.
