A RESOLUTION 1 Proclaiming the month of October as "Domestic Violence Awareness 2 Month." 3 WHEREAS, Domestic violence is the most common crime in 4 America today, affecting 3 million to 4 million women a year; 5 and 6 WHEREAS, According to FBI statistics, a woman is beaten every 7 18 seconds; and 8 WHEREAS, Battering is the single major cause of injury to 9 women, exceeding rape, mugging and automobile accidents; and 10 WHEREAS, Women are seven times more likely than husbands to 11 murder in self-defense but are less likely to be acquitted; and 12 WHEREAS, Family violence is also a vicious cycle; and 13 WHEREAS, Sixty percent of batterers grew up in violent homes 14 and half of all wife-beating cases also involve abuse of 15 children; and 16 WHEREAS, Domestic violence cuts across all economic, 17 educational, racial and religious lines; and
1 WHEREAS, While public awareness of the problem of domestic 2 violence has increased in recent years, domestic violence 3 remains a serious threat to the stability of our society; 4 therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the 6 month of October as "Domestic Violence Awareness Month."
