        AS REPORTED FROM COMMITTEE ON STATE GOVERNMENT, HOUSE OF
           REPRESENTATIVES, AS AMENDED, JUNE 21, 1989

                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending Title 71 (State Government) of the Pennsylvania
     2     Consolidated Statutes, further defining "correction officer";
     3     and making an editorial change.

     4     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5  hereby enacts as follows:
     6     Section 1.  The definition of "correction officer" in section
     7  5102 of Title 71 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes is
     8  amended to read:
     9  § 5102.  Definitions.
    10     The following words and phrases as used in this part, unless
    11  a different meaning is plainly required by the context, shall
    12  have the following meanings:

    14     "Correction officer."  Any full-time employee assigned to the
    15  Department of Corrections or the Department of Public Welfare

     1  whose principal duty is the care, custody and control or direct
     2  therapeutic treatment of inmates of a penal or correctional
     3  institution [or], community treatment center, facility for the    <--
     4  criminally insane FORENSIC UNIT IN A STATE HOSPITAL or secure     <--
     5  unit of a youth development center operated by the [Bureau of
     6  Correction] Department of Corrections or by the Department of
     7  Public Welfare.
     8     * * *
     9     Section 2.  Within 30 days after the effective date of this
    10  act, the Department of Corrections and the Department of Public
    11  Welfare shall certify to the State Employees' Retirement Board a
    12  list of new employees qualified under this act.
    13     Section 3.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
