INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, MAY 29, 2009  

  

  

  

A RESOLUTION

  

1

Designating August 9, 2009, as "Coal Miners Day" in Pennsylvania

2

in appreciation, honor and remembrance of the accomplishments

3

and sacrifices of coal miners in this Commonwealth.

4

WHEREAS, The number of coal miners who have died on the job

5

in this Commonwealth since 1870 totals 51,514, which consists of

6

31,119 underground anthracite fatalities and 20,395 underground

7

bituminous fatalities; and

8

WHEREAS, In 1907, the deadliest year in United States and

9

Pennsylvania coal mining history, 3,242 miners were killed,

10

including 1,514 miners from Pennsylvania; and

11

WHEREAS, The General Assembly recognizes the significance of

12

coal mining to the history and vitality of this Commonwealth and

its economy; and

WHEREAS, Coal mining is safer today because the industry, its

3

miners and government are working together to make the safety of

4

miners the highest priority, thereby significantly reducing the

5

frequency of accidents and fatalities; and

6

WHEREAS, The near-catastrophe and successful rescue of nine

7

miners at the Quecreek Mine in Somerset County in July 2002, the

8

deaths of 12 miners at the Sago Mine in West Virginia in January

9

2006 and the tragedy involving the six miners and three rescue

10

workers at the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah in August 2007 serve

11

as stark reminders of the dangers related to mining; and

12

WHEREAS, Coal miners who have perished in Pennsylvania coal

13

mine accidents and disasters and the families they left behind

14

should not be forgotten; and

15

WHEREAS, The House of Representatives seek to designate

16

August 9, 2009, as "Coal Miners Day" in Pennsylvania in

17

appreciation, honor and remembrance of the accomplishments and

18

sacrifices of coal miners in this Commonwealth; and

19

WHEREAS, Part of the day on August 9, 2009, should be set

20

aside for quiet contemplation to honor those brave miners; and

21

WHEREAS, The House of Representatives urge the Governor to

22

issue a proclamation designating August 9, 2009, as "Coal Miners

23

Day" in Pennsylvania; therefore be it

24

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate August

25

9, 2009, as "Coal Miners Day" in Pennsylvania in appreciation,

26

honor and remembrance of the accomplishments and sacrifices of

27

miners in this Commonwealth; and be it further

28

RESOLVED, That on August 9, 2009, at least part of the day be

29

set aside for quiet contemplation to honor those brave miners;

and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

the Governor urging his issuance of a proclamation to proclaim

3

August 9, 2009, as "Coal Miners Day" in Pennsylvania.
