to United States military personnel called to active duty
between November 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, whether in-country,
in-theater or deployed elsewhere in support of operations in
Southeast Asia; and
WHEREAS, More than 9 million Americans were on active duty
during that period, with an estimated 2.7 million serving in-
country or in-waters; and
WHEREAS, More than 58,000 servicepersons, including nearly
3,150 Pennsylvanians, died; and
WHEREAS, Their names are etched on the black granite panels
of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC; and
WHEREAS, A reported 2,500 Americans were held as prisoners of
war; and
WHEREAS, More than 300,000 Americans were wounded; and
WHEREAS, The United States Department of Defense has
indicated that 1,587 Americans are unaccounted for in Southeast
Asia; and
WHEREAS, To mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, The
United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration was
established pursuant to the 2008 National Defense Authorization
Act; and
WHEREAS, Public and private commemorative partner agencies
and organizations began hosting official events on Memorial Day
2012; and
WHEREAS, Commemorative events, including wreath-laying
ceremonies and presentation of Department of Defense lapel pins
for veterans and surviving spouses, are slated to continue
nationwide through Veterans Day 2025; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize March
29, 2024, as "National Vietnam War Veterans Day" in
