A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of April 29 through May 6, 2019, as
"Children's Mental Health Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, Addressing the complex mental health needs of
children, youths and families is fundamental to the future of
our Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Poor mental health and mental health disorders
debilitate many and are an often overlooked health issue; and
WHEREAS, One in five children suffers from a mental disorder
and 79% of children from 6 to 17 years of age living with a
mental disorder do not receive mental health care; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 5% to 9% of children between 9 and 17
years of age live with severe emotional disturbances that cause
functional impairment in their daily lives; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 70% of children and young people who
experience a mental health problem have not had appropriate

interventions at a sufficiently early age; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing signs of poor mental health in children
is vitally important for successful child development; and
WHEREAS, Developing comprehensive, coordinated mental health
services for children, youths and families is a critical
responsibility of State government; and
WHEREAS, It is appropriate that we set aside one week each
year to direct our attention to our children's mental health and
well-being and our system of related resources and services;
therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
week of April 29 through May 6, 2019, as "Children's Mental
Health Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That all residents, agencies and organizations
interested in meeting every child's mental health needs unite in
this observance in order to make our young constituents aware of
available resources and become successful and healthy adults.
