A RESOLUTION
Designating January 21, 2024, as "AmeriCorps Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, From September 2023 to September 2024, AmeriCorps is
celebrating its 30th anniversary of public service to our
nation; and
WHEREAS, Every year, more than 200,000 people enroll to serve
our nation by volunteering with AmeriCorps, an organization
created through the bipartisan National and Community Service
Trust Act of 1993, championed by former President Bill Clinton
and former Senator Bob Dole; and
WHEREAS, Harris Wofford, a former Senator from Pennsylvania,
served as CEO of the Corporation for National and Community
Service from 1995 to 2001, and in that capacity oversaw
AmeriCorps and contributed to its development and growth; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wofford continued to advocate for national
service and volunteering until his death on January 21, 2019;
and

WHEREAS, Volunteers work in communities across our nation and
Commonwealth, focusing on six areas of impact:
(1) Disaster services.
(2) Economic development.
(3) Environmental stewardship.
(4) Education.
(5) Healthy futures.
(6) Veterans and military families;
and
WHEREAS, Last year in this Commonwealth alone, AmeriCorps
volunteers served in more than 1,200 locations, including food
banks, homeless shelters, health clinics and schools; and
WHEREAS, AmeriCorps has had a significant impact on the lives
of many residents of this Commonwealth, communities throughout
our State and in every corner of our country; and
WHEREAS, In celebrating AmeriCorps' three decades of service,
we are shown that all of us can be great because all of us can
serve; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate January
21, 2024, as "AmeriCorps Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor Harris
Wofford's lifetime commitment to public service, which included
overseeing AmeriCorps and contributing to its development and
growth; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives extend its
appreciation to all those who have volunteered to serve our
Commonwealth and our country.
