        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           SEPTEMBER 23, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Extolling Diana, Princess of Wales, and extending sympathy upon
     2     her death.

     3     WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has ties with the
     4  British monarchy which began when England wrested control of
     5  this woodland territory from the Swedes in 1661 and which
     6  culminated when King Charles II granted Penn's Charter in 1681;
     7  and
     8     WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth have been deeply
     9  saddened by the sudden, tragic death on August 31, 1997, of
    10  Diana, Princess of Wales, a great Englishwoman for whom we have
    11  the utmost respect and affection; and
    12     WHEREAS, The people of this Commonwealth wish to join with
    13  peoples from around the world and bestow tribute on the memory

     1  of Diana, Princess of Wales, for the example of quiet but
     2  powerful leadership she demonstrated with unsurpassable dignity,
     3  grace and wisdom throughout her public and private life, for her
     4  respectful but unflinching modernization of the Royal Family and
     5  for her imprint on British history during her all too short
     6  life; therefore be it
     7     RESOLVED, That on the occasion of this sorrowful loss, the
     8  House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     9  extend the most heartfelt sympathy and condolences of the people
    10  of this Commonwealth to her sons, the Princes William and Henry,
    11  to her husband of 15 years, Prince Charles, and to all the
    12  people of Great Britain; and be it further
    13     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transcribed with
    14  dignity and transmitted to:
