                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing the President and Congress to enact legislation
     2     requiring the United States Government to be responsible for
     3     certain low-level radioactive waste.

     4     WHEREAS, The residents of Pennsylvania are concerned about
     5  the safe disposal and permanent isolation of low-level
     6  radioactive waste; and
     7     WHEREAS, There are two broad categories of radioactive waste,
     8  low-level and high-level, and low-level waste has been divided
     9  into three classifications, Class A, Class B and Class C; and
    10     WHEREAS, The low-level radioactive waste designated Class C
    11  includes some extremely dangerous material which could threaten
    12  human life and the environment for hundreds or thousands of
    13  years; and
    14     WHEREAS, Each state is now responsible for the disposal of
    15  low-level radioactive waste generated within its borders, while
    16  the Federal Government is responsible for the disposal of high-
    17  level radioactive waste; therefore be it

     1     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the
     2  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania memorialize the President and
     3  Congress to enact legislation requiring all Class C low-level
     4  radioactive waste to be considered high-level radioactive waste
     5  and therefore the responsibility of the United States
     6  Government.
