A RESOLUTION
Designating the week of April 22 through 29, 2017, as "Earth
Week" in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "Earth Day" was first held on April 22, 1970, in
response to a growing movement among many of the nation's young
adults over concerns of the continued deterioration of natural
environments; and
WHEREAS, The annual observation of "Earth Day" brings
environmental organizations, communities and groups of
individuals from many different demographics together to foster
support for environmental initiatives and programs; and
WHEREAS, "Earth Day" is considered to be the largest secular
observance in the world and is celebrated by more than 1 billion
people worldwide; and
WHEREAS, While "Earth Day" remains an important day to focus
on the need to protect the environment, many college campuses

and environmental groups now dedicate an entire week to "Earth
Day" activities and, thus unofficially celebrate "Earth Week";
and
WHEREAS, The Commonwealth would benefit by joining these
institutions and organizations to increase conservation-related
educational opportunities and extend recognition of the
importance of protecting our planet to one week; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the
week of April 22 through 29, 2017, as "Earth Week" in
Pennsylvania.
