A RESOLUTION 1 Memorializing the President of the United States to begin 2 negotiations with certain African states to end apartheid in 3 South Africa. 4 WHEREAS, The brutal and oppressive apartheid situation in the 5 Republic of South Africa continues to deteriorate; and 6 WHEREAS, Continuing to ignore or downplay the situation will 7 only cause needless suffering by black South African peoples; 8 and 9 WHEREAS, Economic support of African states surrounding the 10 Republic of South Africa would lessen their economic dependence 11 on the Republic of South Africa; and 12 WHEREAS, Greater economic independence would give these 13 states greater leverage to end the apartheid system practiced by 14 the Republic of South Africa; therefore be it 15 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 16 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania memorialize the President of the 17 United States to begin negotiations with Botswana, Namibia,
1 Zambia and Zimbabwe, and with the African National Congress 2 (ANC) with the goal of giving these states and the ANC economic 3 assistance for the purpose of eliminating the apartheid system 4 of the Republic of South Africa; and be it further 5 RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be immediately 6 transmitted to the President of the United States.
