                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the week of May 5 through May 11, 1991, as "Small
     2     Business Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The small business sector is dynamic in its capacity
     4  for entrepreneurship, innovation and job creation. Small
     5  businesses lead the way in productivity and job growth; and
     6     WHEREAS, Not only are small businesses an important source of
     7  major innovation which creates new markets, but they also
     8  improve the quality of life for this Commonwealth; and
     9     WHEREAS, Fifty-four percent of the net jobs added to
    10  Pennsylvania's economy between 1976 and 1982 came from small
    11  firms in Pennsylvania with fewer than 500 employees, and 97.7%

     1  of the business establishments in Pennsylvania are small
     2  businesses with fewer than 100 employees; and
     3     WHEREAS, In addition to the 267,444 small business
     4  establishments in 1988, Pennsylvania had 783,388 self-employed
     5  proprietors; and
     6     WHEREAS, Because small businesses are the backbone of
     7  Pennsylvania's economy and one of our best sources of future
     8  jobs, the General Assembly of Pennsylvania is committed to
     9  enacting legislation that fosters the development of small
    10  business and will increase job opportunity and improve overall
    11  economic progress for Pennsylvania; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives pay tribute to
    13  Pennsylvania's small business community and recognize the week
    14  of May 5 through May 11, 1991, as "Small Business Week" in
    15  Pennsylvania.
