        INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35,
           MARCH 12, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring the week of April 29 through May 5, 2001, as "Persons
     2     with Disabilities Employment Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The House of Representatives finds that persons with
     4  disabilities have the highest unemployment rate in this
     5  Commonwealth; and
     6     WHEREAS, The House of Representatives finds that there are
     7  more than 300,000 Pennsylvanians with disabilities of working
     8  age and that 220,000 are unemployed, creating a 73% unemployment
     9  rate for this population; and
    10     WHEREAS, It is the policy of the Commonwealth to encourage


     1  and assist individuals who are blind or have other severe
     2  disabilities to achieve maximum independence through productive
     3  and gainful employment; and
     4     WHEREAS, It is clear that providing work opportunities for
     5  persons with disabilities benefits both individuals with
     6  disabilities and society as a whole by allowing individuals with
     7  disabilities to become contributors to the State and local
     8  economy; therefore be it
     9     RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives declare April 29
    10  through May 5, 2001, as "Persons with Disabilities Employment
    11  Week" in Pennsylvania.
