A RESOLUTION

 

1Observing February 12, 2013, as the 204th anniversary of the
2birth of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United
3States.

4WHEREAS, President Lincoln became the 16th President of the
5United States on March 4, 1861, and served in that role until
6his death on April 15, 1865; and

7WHEREAS, President Lincoln was born into humble circumstances
8on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky;
9and

10WHEREAS, A strong believer in the values of education and
11hard work, President Lincoln, who grew up in Indiana and into
12maturity in Illinois, served in the Illinois legislature for
13eight years and was a successful lawyer; and

1WHEREAS, President Lincoln served in the United States House
2of Representatives from 1847 to 1849 and ran for United States
3Senator from Illinois in 1858, a campaign which, though
4unsuccessful at the time, catapulted him into national
5prominence and led to his nomination as the 1860 Republican
6candidate for President of the United States; and

7WHEREAS, President Lincoln's outstanding role as president
8during the Civil War brought him historical recognition as one
9of our nation's greatest leaders; therefore be it

10RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives observe February
1112, 2013, as the 204th anniversary of the birth of Abraham
12Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States.
