Subject: Extension of LIHEAP to Aid Working Families

We all know that low to moderate income households will be the most severely impacted by the spread of the novel COVID-19 virus. Without immediate action by the government and the private sector, the burden will fall on our most vulnerable and working families who are already struggling to survive. Without immediate action, public healthcare initiatives will be undermined. Workers who won’t get paid will not stay home, and families without health care won’t get tested or seek treatment.

That's why I'm proposing legislation that will extend the traditional application deadline of the LIHEAP (Low Income Heating Assistance) program until all funds are expended. LIHEAP provides cash grants to help low-income households pay for home heating fuel and crisis grants to address heating emergencies such as a furnace failure or unexpected fuel shortages. By extending the application deadline, we ensure that our most vulnerable residents have the resources they need to cover those unplanned expenses.

Please stand with me as we continue to offer real solutions to families facing serious challenges thanks to the COVID-19 crisis.
