MATTHIAS, Benjamin, a Representative from Philadelphia City; born, circa 1809 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.; lawyer; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1832-1833 term; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House for the 1833-1834 term; appointed, director, Northern Liberties school board (1834-1840); president, Philadelphia Association for the Relief of Disabled Firemen; publisher and editor, Saturday Chronicle (1836-1842); trustee, Dickinson College (1837-1850); member, Committee of Twenty-Five, Philadelphia (1843); reelected to the House as a Whig for the 1846 and 1847 terms; elected, Pennsylvania State Senate (1848-1852; president, 1851); died in the office of the Senate, August 14, 1852 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Monument Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (defunct); removed to Lawnview Cemetery, Rockledge, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
