STEVENSON, William Erskine, a Representative from Allegheny County; born, March 18, 1820 in Warren, Warren County, Pa.; carpenter and cabinet maker; unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania State Senate (1852); elected, school director, 6th Ward, Pittsburgh (1855); labor spokesman; elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1857 term; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1858 term; elected, delegate, Republican National Convention (1860, 1864, 1872); delegate, Constitutional Convention, West Virginia (1862-1863); elected, West Virginia State Senate (1863-1868: president, 1865-1868); elected, Governor of West Virginia (1869-1871); unsuccessful campaign for reelection as Governor (1870); publisher, Parkersburg State Journal (10 years); farmer; director, West Virginia Oil Land Company; died, November 29, 1883 in Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia; interred, Riverview Cemetery, Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia.
