MURTHA, John Patrick, Jr., a Representative from Cambria and Westmoreland Counties; born, June 17, 1932 in New Martinsville, Wetzel County, WV; graduated, Ramsey High School, 1951; attended, Washington and Jefferson College, 1951-1952; B.A., University of Pittsburgh, 1961; attended, Indiana State College (now Indiana University of Pennsylvania), 1963; served, United States Marine Corps (1952-1955, 1966-1967); served, United States Marine Corps Reserves (1955-1966, 1967-1990); businessman; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in a Special Election, May 20, 1969; Sworn-In on June 2, 1969 to serve the remaining 1969 term; reelected to serve the 1971 and 1973 terms; resigned from the House, February 5, 1974; elected, United States Congress (February 5, 1974-2010); died while in the office of Congress, February 8, 2010 in the city of Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia; interred, Grandview Cemetery, Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.
