PATTERSON, John James, Sr., a Representative from Juniata, Snyder and Union Counties; born, August 8, 1830 at Waterloo, Juniata County, Pa.; graduated, Jefferson College (now Washington & Jefferson College), 1848; captain, 15th Regular Infantry, United States Army (1861-1865, Civil War); manager, tannery; owner and editor, Juniata Sentinel (1852, 1863-1865); owner, publisher and editor, Harrisburg Telegraph (1853-1855);  elected as a People’s Party Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1859 and 1861 terms; not a candidate for reelection to the House for the 1860 and 1862 terms; clerk, prothonotary’s office, Juniata County; president, Juniata Bank of Lewistown (1863-1869); president, Greenville and Columbia County Railroad Company (1870); president, Blue Ridge Railroad Company (1871-1897); elected, South Carolina Senate (1872-1876); not a candidate for reelection to the Senate (1876); elected, delegate, National Republican Convention (1874); builder, electric lighting, power plants and electric railways; president, Pennsylvania Traction Company (1893); died, September 28, 1912 in Mifflintown, Juniata County, Pennsylvania; interred, Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, Juniata County, Pennsylvania.
