MAGEE, John Alexander, a Representative from Cumberland and Perry Counties; born, October 14, 1827 in Landisburg, Perry County, Pa.; graduated, New Bloomfield Academy; apprentice, Perry County Democrat (1845-1850); compositor, Harrisburg Keystone and Daily American (1850-1851); teacher (1851-1852); type setter, National Era, Washington, DC (1853); editor, proprietor and publisher, Perry County Democrat (1854-1903); elected, chair, Perry County Democratic Committee (1856); elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1862; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1863); elected, delegate, Democratic National Convention (1868, 1876, 1896); elected, United States Congress (1873-1875); unsuccessful campaign for reelection to Congress in (1874, 1878); chair, Democratic State Committee (1894-1897); died, November 18, 1903 in New Bloomfield, Perry County, Pennsylvania; interred, Bloomfield Cemetery, New Bloomfield, Perry County, Pennsylvania.
