PERSHING, Cyrus Long, a Representative from Cambria County; born, February 3, 1825 in Youngstown, Westmoreland County, Pa.; graduated, Jefferson College (now Washington and Jefferson College), 1848; A.M, Jefferson College; J.D., Washington and Jefferson College; studied law under Jeremiah S. Black; store clerk; clerk, weigh lock of the Pennsylvania Canal, Johnstown; teacher; attorney (1850-1872); unsuccessful campaign, United States Congress (1856, 1858); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representative in 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, and 1865; elected, delegate, National Union Convention (1866); unsuccessful campaign, Supreme Court of Pennsylvania (1869); elected, president judge, Pennsylvania Court of Common Pleas, Schuylkill County (1872-1899); unsuccessful campaign, Governor of Pennsylvania (1875); died, June 29, 1903 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania; interred, Charles Baber Cemetery, Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
