McCALMONT, John Swayze, a Representative from Clarion, Jefferson and Venango Counties; born, April 28, 1822 in Franklin, Venango County, Pa.; attended, Allegheny College; graduated, West Point Academy (1842); second lieutenant, 3rd Regiment, 1st Infantry then 8th Infantry, United States Army (1842-1843); colonel, 10th Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserves (1861-1862); printer, Franklin Intelligencer (1834-1835); attorney (1844-1885); appointed, Deputy Attorney General, Clarion, McKean and Elk Counties (1845-1848); elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Democrat to serve the 1849 and 1850 terms; elected, Speaker (1850); gubernatorial appointee, president judge, 18th Judicial District (1853-1861); appointed, commissioner, United States Customs Service, Washington, DC (1885-1889); died, December 2, 1906 in Washington, District of Columbia; interred, Franklin Cemetery, Franklin, Venango County, Pennsylvania.
