JOHNSON, Henry Clay, a Representative from Crawford and Warren Counties; born, March 29, 1826 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pa.; captain, “Meadville Volunteers,” becoming Company F, 38th Regiment, 9th Pennsylvania Volunteer Reserve (1861, Civil War); editor and publisher, Crawford County Democratic Republican; attorney-at-law; elected, Attorney General, New Mexico Territory (1852); elected, District Attorney, Crawford County (1856-1859); elected as a Union Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1862 and 1863; elected, Speaker (1864); reelected to the House as a Republican in 1869; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1864, 1870); elected, delegate, Republican National Convention (1864); president, Republican State Convention (1865); appointed, United States Commissioner of Customs (1874-1885); United States Patent holder, meat refrigerating and dehydrating apparatus (1885), refrigerator for transporting meat (1885), apparatus for cooling buildings (1885), refrigerator car (1885), corpse cooler and preserver (1885); died, June 3, 1892 in Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania; interred, Greendale Cemetery, Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
