REYNOLDS, John Merriman, a Representative from Bedford and Fulton Counties; born, March 5, 1848, near Quarryville, Lancaster County, Pa.; graduated, Millersville State Normal School (now Millersville University), 1867; A.M., Columbian University (now George Washington University), 1895; teacher; principal, Bedford schools (1867-1868); studied law under John W. Dickerson; lawyer (1870-1933); co-owner and editor, Bedford Gazette (1872-1880); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1872 and 1873; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1874); elected, District Attorney, Bedford (1875-1878); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania State Senate (1882); president, board of education, Bedford (1884-1900); elected, delegate, Democratic National Convention (1888, 1892); trustee, Wernersville State Hospital (1892); Presidential appointee, Assistant Secretary of the Interior (April 15, 1893-June 1, 1897); elected, delegate, Republican National Committee (1896); engaged, Colonial Iron Company; elected as a Republican, United States Congress (1905-1911); resigned from Congress, January 17, 1911; elected, Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania (1911-1915); engaged, banking; appointed, Commission to Revise the Banking Laws (1917-1925); died, September 14, 1933 in the city of Bedford, Bedford County, Pennsylvania; interred, Bedford Cemetery, Bedford, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
