NEWELL, James, a Representative from Philadelphia County; born, February 13, 1835 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.; plumber; appointed, register of gas, Philadelphia (1858-1863); assistant assessor of Internal Revenue, Philadelphia (1863-1867); clerk, Water Department, Philadelphia (1867-1868); elected as Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1873 term; reelected to serve for 5 consecutive terms thereafter; elected, delegate, Republican State Convention; president, 24th Ward Republican Executive Committee; died while in office, May 1, 1878 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Mount Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.
