KIRK, Salathiel Cleaver, a Representative from Schuylkill County; born, April 11, 1845 in Landisburg, Perry County, Pa.; attended, Millersville State Normal School (now Millersville University of Pennsylvania); teacher (18 years); founder, West Schuylkill Normal School at Tremont; magazine author; newspaper editor; editor, Pottsville Standard; manager, Tremont News; founder and operator, West Schuylkill Press; editor, Williamsport Sun and Banner; editor, Pottsville Miners’ Journal; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1878; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1880); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania State Senate (1888); elected, prothonotary, Schuylkill County (1891-1893); deputy collector, United States Customs Service, Philadelphia (1894-1900); died, August 20, 1913 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Odd Fellows Cemetery, Tamaqua, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania.
