HUGHES, James Watson, a Representative from Bedford County; born, November 16, 1835 in Turbett Township, Juniata County, Pa.; attended, Cassville Seminary, Huntingdon County, Pa.; blacksmith; teacher; principal, Allegheny Seminary (8 years); principal, Everett schools; superintendent, Bedford County Public Schools (1875-1881); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1883 term; appointed, Joint Committee to Investigate Pennsylvania Soldiers’ Orphan Schools (1883); not a candidate for reelection to the House (1884); professor, Cumberland Valley State Normal School (now Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania); died, February 4, 1912 in Everett, Bedford County, Pennsylvania; interred, Everett Cemetery, Everett, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
