BROWN, Jefferson L., a Representatives from Elk County; born, June 25, 1834 in Fort Brewerton, Onondaga County, NY: attended, Smethport Academy; private, Company C, 185th Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry (1864-1865, Civil War); publisher and owner, Elk County Advocate (1855); surveyor; farmer (1860-1862); school teacher (1860-1862); employed, Wilcox Tanning Company (1868-1870); owner, Wilcox Tanning Company (1870-1880); elected, surveyor, Elk County (1871-1875); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1880 term; reelected to the House in 1882 and served in the extra Session of the House, 1883; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1884); employed, Rasselas Lumber Company; organizer and president, Wilcox Bank (1885-1890); died, December 12, 1897 in Wilcox, Elk County, Pennsylvania.
