McGOWAN, George, a Representative from Philadelphia County; born, June 7, 1847 in the city of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pa.; attorney-at-law; appointed, assistant city solicitor, Philadelphia (1869); leader, 2nd Ward Democratic Committee; elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1870 and 1871; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1872); appointed, chief deputy sheriff, Philadelphia County (1877-1879); elected, delegate, Democratic National Convention (1880); reelected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1884 and 1886; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1888); died, August 24, 1908 in the city of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Holy Cross Cemetery, Yeadon, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.
