HUGHES, Dr. Mason Beach, a Representative from Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties; born, September 17, 1842 in Beach Grove, Luzerne County, Pa.; M.D., Jefferson Medical College (now Sidney Kimmel Medical College), 1869; private, Battery F, 43rd Regiment, 1st Pennsylvania Volunteer Artillery (1864-1865, Civil War); surgeon, 7th Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard (1899, Spanish American War); captain, Company H, 7th Regiment, Pennsylvania National Guard (1899, Spanish American War); physician; elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1884 and 1886; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1888); appointed, postmaster, United States Postal Service, Shickshinny (1889-1895); appointed, superintendent, Soldiers’ Orphans’ School of Chester Springs, (1903-1912); died, May 5, 1920 in the city of Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Laurel Hill Cemetery, Orangeville, Columbia County, Pennsylvania.
