KARNS, Russel, a Representative from Sullivan County; born in Benton Township, Columbia County, Pa., March 17, 1842; second lieutenant, Company E, 209th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (1864-1865, Civil War); farmer; owner and operator, Laporte Hotel; elected, burgess, council and school director, Laporte; member, Democratic State Central Committee; chair, Democratic County Committee (1889); elected as a Democrat to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1890; not a candidate for reelection to the House (1892); died, May 12, 1912 in Benton, Columbia County, Pennsylvania; interred, Benton Cemetery, Benton, Columbia County, Pennsylvania.
