SMITH, William Chapman, a Representative from Bedford County; born, June 2, 1845 in the borough of Bedford, Bedford County, Pa.; attended, Millersville State Normal School (now Millersville University of Pennsylvania); teacher (1862-1870); attorney-at-law (1870-1904); unsuccessful campaign, District Attorney, Bedford County (1873); elected, justice of the peace, borough of Bedford (1874-1884); editor and publisher, Bedford Republican (1881-1884); editor and publisher, Bedford Inquirer (1884-1886); editor and publisher, Everett Press and Everett Leader (1889-1902); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for the 1893, 1895, and 1897 terms; unsuccessful campaign for reelection to the House (1898); died, June 16, 1904 in Everett, Bedford County, Pennsylvania; interred, Everett Cemetery, Everett, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
