Born Oct. 13, 1823; Lancaster, Pennsylvania, son of Jacob Miller and Eliza Ewing, Jacob Haldeman was a farmer, banker-financier; Democrat in state House of Representatives, 1850-1851; state senator, 1853-55; moved to New Cumberland Pa. and joined Republican Party abt. 1858; member, 1860 Republican National Convention; selected by President Lincoln as “minister resident of the United States at Stockholm,” 1861; owned farm in Fairview Township, York County. He relocated to Harrisburg by 1880, where he died in November 1889, interred in Harrisburg Cemetery with his wife, Caroline Hummel Haldeman.
